Description
Nathalie Theulot's Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise Blanc is a Chardonnay drawn largely from vines in Mercurey, in a year when hail forced the domaine to look beyond its own rows.
The Côte Chalonnaise runs south from the Côte de Beaune, and the regional Bourgogne appellation there covers wines made across the district's villages. Mercurey is the largest of them, better known for red than white, though its limestone-rich slopes give Chardonnay a firm, savoury cast. Nathalie Theulot works the family domaine in the village, and this white is normally an estate bottling from her own parcels. Hailstorms in 2022 cut yields by around 60 per cent, so a measure of purchased grapes was blended in to make up the volume. The wine is raised without heavy oak influence, keeping the emphasis on texture and citrus drive rather than on wood. It is pulpy and succulent, with a satiny mouthfeel, stone fruit and orange-peel weight, and a bright, grapefruit-pith close. For Australian buyers it sits at the value end of white Burgundy.
Drinking well now and over the next three or four years, it suits roast chicken, grilled whiting or a gruyère tart. Serve at 10–12°C.
