Description
Nathalie Theulot Mercurey Millerandage Rouge is a négociant bottling made from millerandage-affected fruit on a south-facing clay-limestone site.
Nathalie Theulot is best known for Domaine Theulot-Juillot in Mercurey, and this wine comes from her small separate range of négociant bottlings. It began when poor yields led her to buy fruit from grower friends, one parcel of which produced a Mercurey she liked enough to give a label of its own. Millerandage, sometimes called hen and chicken, is the uneven fruit set that leaves a bunch with a mix of small seedless berries and normal ones; the small berries have a high skin-to-juice ratio and concentrate flavour. The winemaking here aims at delicacy and vibrancy rather than structure: a cold soak, minimal extraction and only a lick of new oak. The result is perfumed and juicy, red-fruited, with supple tannins and bright underlying acidity, and it can be opened straight away.
Ready to drink now and over the next four or five years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
