Nautilus Estate Clay Hills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

Nautilus Estate Clay Hills Vineyard Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Marlborough Pinot Noir from a site named for its clay soils.

Pinot Noir has long been a major focus for this family-owned Marlborough estate, founded by the Hill-Smith family of Yalumba. Clay-rich soils, found mainly on the slopes and valleys on the southern side of the Wairau, tend to give Pinot Noir more structure and depth than the stony river flats, and this single-site bottling reflects that. The 2021 shows pomegranate, ripe blackberry, warming spice and savoury notes, with a sweet-fruited mid-palate and generous yet fine-grained tannins leading to an elegant finish.

At around 16 degrees it partners roast duck breast, lamb rack with rosemary or wild mushroom risotto. With a few years of bottle age already, it is ready now and should keep for several more.
