Nautilus Estate Southern Valleys Pinot Noir 2022

Nautilus Estate Southern Valleys Pinot Noir is a concentrated yet graceful Marlborough red grown on the heavier soils south of the Wairau Valley.

Clay-based soils give Pinot Noir from the Omaka, Waihopai and Brancott valleys more depth and structure than fruit from the stony flats, and this wine draws on those sites. The winery belongs to the Hill-Smith family, alongside Yalumba in the Barossa, and has been family owned since it was established. In 2022 the complex nose brings dark cherry, cassis, leather, cigar box and spice, with a fine, dense tannin core and a long savoury close.

Decant briefly and pour at cool room temperature, around 16 to 17 degrees, with slow-cooked lamb shanks, mushroom bourguignon or grilled quail. Ready now, with more to come over the next few years.
