Description

Nicolás Catena Zapata is Argentina's pioneering luxury red, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc from the Catena family's mountain vineyards.

Its first vintage, 1997, made it the first top-tier cuvée from Argentina to be shipped to markets around the world. The idea behind it is to recreate the 'original Bordeaux blend' of the 18th and 19th centuries, when Malbec outweighed Merlot in the Médoc and stood level with Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit comes from massal selections of pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on ungrafted vines, opening a window to the past from Mendoza's high-altitude vineyards.

Decant a couple of hours before serving at around 17 degrees. Pair it with a thick-cut rib-eye, braised lamb shanks or a mature hard cheese. With careful cellaring it will develop for decades.
