Nicolas-Jay Bishop Creek Pinot Noir 2021

Nicolas-Jay Bishop Creek Pinot Noir is a dark, mineral Pinot Noir from an ungrafted old-vine site in Oregon's Yamhill-Carlton district.

Planted on its own roots, the Bishop Creek vineyard lies in the north-west of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, a sheltered pocket of the Willamette Valley whose marine soils tend to produce firm, dark-fruited Pinot Noir. Jean-Nicolas Méo, whose family estate in Vosne-Romanée is a Burgundy benchmark, makes the wine with partner Jay Boberg, and new French oak plays a supporting role. In 2021 there is anise, pencil lead and a gamey note, then roasted plum, cassis, forest floor, candied fennel and blackberry crumble over dusty, medium-weight tannins.

Give it time in a decanter and serve just below room temperature with lamb loin, braised rabbit or aged gouda. This will cellar well for many years.
