Description
Nicole Lamarche's Clos de Vougeot is drawn from two parcels at opposite ends of the walled Grand Cru and is unusually fine-boned for the site.
Clos de Vougeot is the largest Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, fifty hectares within a single wall and divided among some eighty owners, so the name alone tells you little; position on the slope and the hand of the grower tell you everything. Domaine François Lamarche, run by Nicole Lamarche, holds two lieux-dits here. Montiotes Hautes lies at the top of the clos near the château, on the thinner, better-drained ground; Baudes Basse sits lower down towards the RN74, where the soil is heavier. The vines are between forty and fifty years old. Both parcels are picked together and co-ferment in open-top wooden vats. The result is a much finer, prettier reading of Clos de Vougeot, closer in style to Vosne, where the appellation more often runs to power.
Worth ten years and more in the cellar. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast game, beef Wellington or a mature Époisses.
