Nicole Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes comes from half a hectare directly below Aux Malconsorts and La Tâche.

Les Chaumes lies at the southern end of Vosne-Romanée on the lower part of the slope, where deeper soils give a rounder, more open wine than the thin, stony ground above it. Lamarche's holding is a solid half-hectare of vines now between thirty and forty years old, a substantial parcel by the standards of an estate built largely from fractions. Nicole Lamarche has led the domaine since 2007 and works with low yields, whole bunches where the fruit allows and a mix of old oak and amphora, an approach that has made the wines lighter on their feet without losing depth. She likens the character of Chaumes to her Clos de Vougeot, a comparison that carries weight given how finely drawn that grand cru is here, and the wine shows perfumed fruit shot through with earthy, rocky complexity.

Good from four or five years and holding for a dozen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pheasant, beef bourguignon or Époisses.
