Terroir is the theme, approached from several angles and with some scepticism. Alice Feiring wonders whether the word has been worn thin, Marina O'Loughlin considers how a room changes the taste of what is in the glass, and Henry Harris traces recipes back to childhood holidays, tinned tripe and all. Gary Taxali's cover has a barrel rider heading for a soaking. Longer pieces cover Côte-Rôtie, Gewürztraminer, Bordeaux's thinner decade, the history of Oddbins and the clay talha wines of Portugal, while Levi Dalton looks at bottles that sit between red and rosé.

Anyone who says terroir in shops and privately wonders whether it still means anything will enjoy the argument. The Côte-Rôtie and talha pieces are the practical reading; Zadie Smith and Danny Dyer are there for the pleasure of it.
