Olivier Leflaive Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru 2020

Olivier Leflaive Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru is white Burgundy at its summit, from a grand cru vineyard straddling the boundary of two of the Côte de Beaune's greatest villages.

Bâtard-Montrachet lies below Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet on the slope, split between the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, and covers a little under twelve hectares divided among a long list of owners. Its position lower on the hill, on deeper and heavier soil, sets it apart from the grand crus immediately above. Olivier Leflaive established his house in Puligny-Montrachet in 1984 and has worked at the top of the white Burgundy hierarchy ever since, drawing on his own holdings and on fruit from growers he has known for decades. Grand cru Chardonnay here is barrel fermented and matured on lees, in the manner the Côte de Beaune has followed for generations.

Worth cellaring for a decade or more, and best served at around 12 degrees with turbot, lobster or Bresse chicken rather than anything too assertive.
