Olivier Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras 2021

Olivier Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from the domaine's home village in the Mâconnais.

Les Cras is one of the named parcels within La Roche Vineuse that the domaine bottles separately, part of a wider shift in the Mâconnais as growers came to argue that its limestone slopes deserve the same site-by-site attention long given in the Côte d'Or. The name Cras, in its various spellings, recurs the length of Burgundy and generally points to stony ground. Olivier and Corinne Merlin have farmed here since 1987, when they took over the Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin, and their whites are whole-bunch pressed and raised in barrel on lees before bottling. Their son Théo now works alongside them, and the domaine remains one of the reference addresses of southern Burgundy.

Serve at around 11 to 12 degrees with roast fish, chicken or veal; a couple of years in bottle will do it no harm.
