Description
Olivier Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes is an old-vine Chardonnay from the domaine's home village in the Mâconnais.
Vieilles vignes is not a regulated term in France, so it means what the grower intends by it; in practice it marks a domaine's oldest parcels, which crop less and root more deeply than young plantings. La Roche Vineuse is one of the villages permitted to append its name to the Mâcon appellation, and it owes much of its present standing to Olivier and Corinne Merlin, who took over the Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin here in 1987 and applied Côte d'Or methods to Mâconnais Chardonnay: whole-bunch pressing, barrel fermentation and extended ageing on lees. The Mâconnais was for a long time regarded chiefly as a source of volume, and growers such as the Merlins, whose son Théo now works alongside them, are the reason that view no longer holds.
Serve at around 11 to 12 degrees with poultry, richer fish or a soft washed-rind cheese.
