Description
Olivier Merlin Pouilly-Fuissé is a Chardonnay from the most celebrated appellation of the Mâconnais.
Pouilly-Fuissé covers four communes at the southern end of the Mâconnais, beneath the limestone escarpments of Solutré and Vergisson, and was granted its appellation in 1936, among the first in France. In 2020 twenty-two climats were promoted to premier cru, the first such classification anywhere in the Mâconnais and a measure of how far the region's ambitions have moved. Olivier and Corinne Merlin have been part of that shift since 1987, when they took over the Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin at La Roche Vineuse and began treating Mâconnais Chardonnay with the care usually reserved for the Côte d'Or, pressing whole bunches and ageing in barrel on lees. Their son Théo now works alongside them at La Roche Vineuse.
Serve at around 11 to 12 degrees with roast chicken, scallops or richer fish, and expect it to hold well for five years or so.
