Oratoire Côtes du Rhône Village Cairanne Rouge Les Douyes 2014

Oratoire Côtes du Rhône Village Cairanne Rouge Les Douyes is a Cairanne red drawn entirely from one limestone lieu-dit planted in 1905.

Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint Martin farms biodynamically at Cairanne, a southern Rhône village raised to cru status in 2016 and set apart by the limestone running through its soils. Les Douyes, previously labelled Cuvée Prestige, takes its name from the lieu-dit that supplies it, in the Quartier Saint-Martin, where the vines went into the ground in 1905 and are now well over a century old. Yields there run to only 18–25 hectolitres per hectare. The blend is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, with a touch of Counoise among the old plantings. Winemaking follows the estate's cult Haut Coustias, though the ageing is shorter, eighteen months in large old foudre rather than twenty-four, and in qualitative terms the wine stands toe to toe with it.

It opens earlier than the Haut Coustias yet has the structure to keep for a decade. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, roast duck or a mushroom ragù.
