Description
Oratoire St Martin Cairanne Les Douyes Rouge is a biodynamic old-vine Cairanne drawn from two of the appellation's steep hillside climats.
Cairanne was promoted from Côtes du Rhône Villages to its own cru in 2016, and Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint Martin, run by the brothers Frédéric and François Alary, is one of the estates that made the case for it. The vineyards sit on steep slopes in two climats, Saint-Martin and Les Douyes, and this cuvée blends vines of more than 60 years from both: mostly the yellow clay and limestone of Saint-Martin, with a little from the more limestone-rich Les Douyes. Yields can fall as low as 20 hl/ha. The blend is Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah with a sprinkling of whole-bunch Carignan and Counoise. Fermentation was with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, followed by twelve months' maturation and bottling without fining or filtration, with only a touch of sulphur added at bottling. The farming is biodynamic.
Approachable after two or three years and capable of fifteen. Serve at 16–18°C with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, daube of beef or grilled sausages with herbs.
