Description
Oratoire Saint Martin Cairanne Réserve des Seigneurs is a biodynamic southern Rhône red from 60-year-old vines in two hillside climats of the appellation.
Cairanne was promoted from Côtes du Rhône Villages to its own cru in 2016, and Oratoire Saint Martin was among the estates that made the case for it. The domaine's vineyards lie on steep hills in two climats, Saint-Martin and Les Douyes; this cuvée comes mainly from the yellow clay and limestone of Saint-Martin, topped up with fruit from the limestone-rich Les Douyes. Vines are more than sixty years old and yields can fall as low as 20 hectolitres per hectare. The blend is led by Grenache at around 60 per cent, with Mourvèdre and Syrah and a small whole-bunch portion of Carignan and Counoise. Farming is biodynamic. Fermentation is with indigenous yeasts in concrete, ageing runs 12 months split between concrete and large-format oak, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a touch of sulphur.
Drinking well now and capable of a decade; serve at 16–18°C with slow-roast lamb, daube of beef or grilled eggplant.
