Oratoire St Martin Cairanne Reserve des Seigneurs Blanc 2022

Oratoire Saint Martin Cairanne Réserve des Seigneurs Blanc is a biodynamic old-vine white from limestone soils at the top of the appellation.

Cairanne was promoted to its own cru in 2016 and, unusually for the southern Rhône, its limestone soils and elevation make it a genuinely serious source of white wine. Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint Martin farms biodynamically here, with meticulously managed old vines yielding an average of just 25 hectolitres per hectare. The blend is 30 per cent Clairette planted in 1935, Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris also dating from the 1930s, and co-planted Roussanne and Marsanne from an old plot ringed by pine trees. The fruit is fermented without additions and raised in the domaine's old concrete tanks, with no oak involved, so the concentration comes from the low yields and the vine age rather than from the cellar. Freshness and mineral drive are the vineyards' contribution.

Drink over the next five to eight years, ideally decanted, with roast chicken, grilled fish or a creamy gratin. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
