Ornellaia DOC 2018

Ornellaia DOC is the flagship Bolgheri Superiore of the estate of the same name, and one of the wines that made the Tuscan coast a serious address for Bordeaux varieties.

Bolgheri sits on the Tuscan coast, an area with little fine wine history before the 1970s, when growers found that its gravel soils and sea breezes suited Bordeaux varieties far better than Sangiovese. Ornellaia was established there in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, released its first vintage in 1985 and is now owned by Marchesi Frescobaldi. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are picked and fermented parcel by parcel, then matured for around eighteen months in French oak barriques, a good share of them new, and blended progressively over that time before a further rest in bottle at the estate.

Decant an hour before serving at around 18 degrees, with roast or braised beef, lamb, game birds or aged pecorino; good bottles hold and improve for fifteen to twenty years.
