Description
Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove dell' Ornellaia is the second wine of one of Bolgheri's defining estates, made on the Tuscan coast from the same Bordeaux varieties as its senior sibling.
Le Serre Nuove is the second wine of Ornellaia, an estate founded at Bolgheri in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and now owned by Marchesi Frescobaldi. It was introduced in the late 1990s and takes its fruit from the parcels and younger vines not selected for the flagship, made in the same way but with a lighter hand. Bolgheri lies on the Tuscan coast, where gravel and clay soils and constant sea breezes suit Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot far better than the Sangiovese grown inland. Parcels are picked and fermented separately, then matured for roughly fifteen months in French oak barriques, a smaller share of them new than for the grand vin.
Decant briefly and serve at about 18 degrees with grilled lamb, braised beef or a plate of Tuscan salumi and pecorino; it drinks well young and keeps comfortably for eight to ten years.
