Ornellaia Masseto IGT 2021

Ornellaia Masseto IGT is a Merlot from a single hillside of blue clay above Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, and one of the most sought after red wines in Italy.

The Masseto vineyard covers roughly seven hectares on a slope near the Ornellaia estate, planted on Pliocene marine clay that is rare in the area and difficult to work, and it was the recognition of that soil in the 1980s that led to the wine. The first vintage was 1986, and the wine is now made at its own dedicated winery, cut into the hill itself and completed in recent years, with gravity flow and cellars set within the clay. It is built on Merlot, fermented parcel by parcel and matured in French oak barriques for around two years before a long period in bottle at the property.

Decant well ahead and serve at about 18 degrees with roast beef, venison or truffle dishes; it repays twenty years or more in a properly cool cellar.
