Ornellaia Masseto Massetino IGT 2020

Ornellaia Masseto Massetino IGT is the second wine of Masseto, drawn from the same hillside of blue clay above Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast.

Masseto grew out of the recognition, in the 1980s, that a small slope of Pliocene marine clay near the Ornellaia estate could make a Merlot of unusual depth, and the wine has been made there since the 1986 vintage. Massetino is a much more recent addition, introduced late last decade as a companion to the flagship rather than a simple declassification, and made with the same fruit sources, the same parcel by parcel vinification and the same care in the cellar dug into the Masseto hill. It is built around Merlot and matured in French oak barriques, though for a shorter period than the senior wine, and is released earlier.

Decant for half an hour and serve at around 18 degrees with roast beef, duck or mushroom risotto; it is drinkable earlier than Masseto but will still hold ten years or more.
