Description
Pala Elima Monica di Sardenga is a red made entirely from Monica, one of the varieties Sardinia has made its own.
Cantina Pala is based at Serdiana, inland from Cagliari in the south of the island, an area better known abroad for Cannonau and Vermentino but with a long working history of Monica. The Monica di Sardegna denomination covers the whole island, and the grape is generally thought to have arrived from the Iberian peninsula during the centuries when Sardinia was governed from Aragon, one of many Spanish traces still visible in the local language and food. It is an approachable, early-drinking red, usually fermented in stainless steel and bottled young without new oak, so the wine arrives as a straightforward expression of a warm, dry, sun-exposed island.
Good with grilled lamb, sausages, pasta with tomato and pecorino, or a plate of salumi. Serve at cool room temperature, or lightly chilled in warm weather.
