Description

Paolo Scavino Barbera d'Alba DOC is a Piedmontese red made from the everyday grape of the Langhe by one of Barolo's leading houses.

Barbera d'Alba covers the hills around Alba on both banks of the Tanaro, taking in the Langhe villages far better known for Nebbiolo. Barbera is the workhorse of Piedmont, the grape growers traditionally drank themselves, naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, and it is usually given the sites that Nebbiolo does not want. The Scavino family has been based at Castiglione Falletto since 1921, and Enrico Scavino, now working with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, built the estate's reputation on single-vineyard Barolo from the late 1970s onward. The Barbera is farmed and vinified with the same attention. It is the more structured of Piedmont's two main Barbera appellations, the other being Barbera d'Asti to the north.

It is a natural partner for tomato-based pasta, salumi, risotto or braised meats, and is best served a shade below room temperature.
