Description
Pascal Reverdy Sancerre La Grande Rue is an old-vine white Sancerre from plantings dating to 1936, matured in large oak.
Sancerre runs across steep hills on the left bank of the upper Loire, where Sauvignon Blanc is planted on three soil types: the chalky Kimmeridgian marl called terres blanches, the shallow limestone gravel of the caillottes, and flinty silex nearest the river. Domaine Pascal Reverdy is based at Maimbray, in the commune of Sury-en-Vaux at the northern end of the appellation, and farms its vines organically. La Grande Rue is the domaine's old-vine selection, from vines planted in 1936 and so close to ninety years of age. Very old vines carry small crops and root deeply, and their fruit is concentrated and low in vigour. This cuvée is raised in large oak vessels, whose low ratio of wood to wine adds breadth and polish without an obvious oak flavour.
Richer and more structured than a standard Sancerre, it suits roast poultry, veal and mature goat cheese and will reward a few years in bottle; serve at around 11 to 12 degrees.
