Patrick Underwood Chalmers Nebbiolo 2023

Patrick Underwood Chalmers Nebbiolo is a structured single-vineyard Nebbiolo from Colbinabbin in Heathcote.

A slope facing east at the Chalmers vineyard holds this block, right in its sweet middle, rows running east to west so the vines take the softer morning light. Chalmers carries one of the most diverse Nebbiolo plantings in the country. Underneath is ancient Cambrian meta-basalt, greenstone and quartz breaking through clay and silt, good bones for a variety that lives on structure. This is the third harvest from the site and only the second release under the label: Pat Underwood picked the 2022 earlier than he wanted and declined to bottle it. For 2023 he leaned towards northern Piemonte, towards Bramaterra and Ghemme, adding darker clonal material in MAT5 and MAT8 to his preferred MAT1, 3, 10 and CV230.

Perfume first, rose and tar and dried cherry, then a long savoury palate framed by fine, insistent tannin. It will reward a few years. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, with braised beef, mushroom pasta or a plate of well-aged cheese.
