Paul Gros Échézeaux Grand Cru 'Les Beaux Monts Bas' 2023

Paul Gros Échézeaux Grand Cru 'Les Beaux Monts Bas' is a perfumed, medium-bodied red Burgundy from the upper, northern end of the appellation.

At some thirty-five hectares in Flagey-Échézeaux, just north of Vosne-Romanée and bordering Clos de Vougeot, this is an unusually large grand cru. It is split into named climats with noticeably different soils and exposures, so growers with several parcels often keep them apart. This one sits beside the premier cru of the same name, on thinner, stonier limestone than the flatter ground below. Pinot Noir from here leans to perfume and precision, with fine-grained tannin and the spiced, floral character of the neighbouring slope.

Red and dark fruit, spice and a long mineral finish, all on silky tannin. Decant an hour ahead and serve at 16-17°C with game birds, beef or something with truffle.
