Pesquera Ribera del Duero Reserva 2019

Pesquera Ribera del Duero Reserva is made entirely from Tinta del País, the local strain of Tempranillo, from the estate's oldest vines.

Pesquera, the estate founded by Alejandro Fernández at Pesquera de Duero, is one of the names that made Ribera del Duero's modern reputation. The region runs along the Duero on the high Castilian plateau, and the altitude, with its wide swings between day and night temperatures, is what keeps freshness in a thick-skinned grape grown in a hot, dry summer. Unlike Vega Sicilia, the other legendary estate of the region, Pesquera uses no Bordeaux varieties here: the Reserva is pure Tinta del País. The fruit comes from the oldest plantings, and the team has been known to drop as much as half the crop on the vine to concentrate what remains. The wine is aged for fourteen months in oak and then held a further twelve months in bottle before release, which gives a firm, powdery tannin structure and a savoury, aromatic profile.

Decant it if you open it now, or keep it for another decade; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, grilled beef or Manchego.
