Pesquera Ribera del Duero Tinto Crianza 2019

Pesquera Ribera del Duero Tinto Crianza is pure Tempranillo from Alejandro Fernández's estate vineyards on the high plateau at Pesquera de Duero.

Ribera del Duero runs along the Duero river in Castilla y León, at altitudes that give cold nights and a short, intense growing season. Alejandro Fernández established Pesquera in the 1970s and did as much as anyone to build the appellation's modern reputation. The fruit comes from the estate sites of Lucía, Viña Alto and Llano Santiago, at around 730 metres, from vines between 30 and 40 years old on poor, well-drained sand and gravel over a limestone and clay subsoil. The grapes are picked late and mostly destemmed, leaving as many whole berries as possible, and after a cold soak they ferment with natural yeasts, each block kept separate. The unclarified wine goes straight into 225 to 300-litre casks, a considered mix of American, Spanish and French oak custom-made by Spanish coopers. Nothing is filtered.

Drinking now and good for a decade, it suits roast lamb, grilled beef and Manchego. Serve at 16-18°C.
