Pesquera Tinto Reserva Especial 2010

Pesquera Tinto Reserva Especial is a Ribera del Duero Reserva from Alejandro Fernández, held back a decade in bottle before release.

Ribera del Duero runs along the Duero river in Castilla y León, high enough that cold nights preserve acidity in a hot, dry continental climate. Alejandro Fernández, working from the village of Pesquera de Duero, was among the producers who established the region's modern reputation. This wine is made entirely from Tinta del País, the thick-skinned local strain of Tempranillo, from older vines within the boundaries of the village. The vineyard faces south on poor, very pebbly soils over a clay subsoil at more than 800 metres. The team has been known to drop half the crop to regulate yields, which contributes to the power and complexity of the wine while the altitude keeps it fresh. It is aged for 24 to 30 months in oak followed by twelve months in bottle; the Especial designation is reserved for bottlings given far longer cellar age before release, here ten years from harvest.

Drinking well now, with years in hand. Serve with roast lamb, grilled beef or a hard sheep's cheese at 16 to 18°C.
