Description
Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is a classically styled Sangiovese from the Antinori family's estate in the south-west of Montalcino.
The estate lies about six kilometres south-west of the town of Montalcino and shares its name with the 19th-century railway station found there. The Antinori family bought it in 1995, which was also the first vintage of this wine. Vineyards sit at around 130 metres above sea level, well below the hilltop town, on clay and limestone with fine gravel. After destemming, the grapes ferment in stainless steel with roughly twelve days on skins. The wine is then aged for around two years in large oak casks of 30 to 80 hectolitres, a traditional choice that lets Sangiovese mature slowly without picking up strong oak flavour, and it spends further time in bottle before release.
Open it an hour or two ahead, or decant, and serve at around 18 degrees. Bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef, wild boar ragù, roast lamb and aged pecorino are all classic matches. Full-bodied and firmly structured, it will reward a decade or more of careful cellaring.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
