Description
Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Vigna Borgese comes from one of the most highly regarded crus in Barbaresco, on the hills above Neive.
On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the great vineyards of Barbaresco; in his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that the combination of soil, stature and exposure there creates one of the finest sites in the Langhe. Busso's Vigna Borgese vines were planted between thirty and seventy years ago at 260 metres on limestone, clay and marl, with an ideal south-west exposure. The fruit was fermented naturally in tank, then aged for 26 months in 25-hectolitre cask, a traditional approach that leaves the wine's shape to the site rather than to new wood. The style is old-school in both fruit profile and structure: medium- to full-bodied, intense yet elegant, with flesh, savoury complexity and a cool thread of freshness running through the finish.
Worth a decant now and capable of a decade or more in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with braised veal shank, mushroom risotto or aged Parmigiano.
