Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Viti Vecchie Riserva 2016

Piero Busso Barbaresco Albesani Viti Vecchie Riserva is made only in the best years, from vines planted in 1948 beside the cellar.

Albesani, on the western hills above Neive, is one of the great sites of Barbaresco; in his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that the combination of soil, stature and exposure there creates one of the finest vineyards in the Langhe. Busso holds 1.2 hectares on limestone and blue marl at 260 metres, with a south-west exposure, and bottles this Riserva only in the greatest years. It comes exclusively from vines planted in 1948 by Guido Busso, great-grandfather of winemaker Pierguido, on the steepest section of the slope around the cantina. These are the Michet selection of Nebbiolo, valued for concentration and small yields. The fruit ferments naturally and spends up to sixty days on skins, then the wine ages 36 months in a 10-hectolitre oak botte and a further year in bottle, unfined and unfiltered. Just 1001 bottles were made in 2016.

Classic in profile and long-lived; give it several hours of air now or fifteen years in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with braised veal shank, hare ragù or aged Parmigiano.
