Description
Piero Busso Barbaresco Gallina Viti Vecchie Riserva in magnum is drawn from a small parcel of vines planted in 1953 at the heart of the Gallina cru.
Introduced with the 2015 vintage, this Riserva separates Busso's oldest Gallina plantings from the rest of the cru. Gallina lies at 240 metres in Neive on a ridge opposite Albesani; in this part of the vineyard the soil is rich in bluish-grey calcareous clay marl with a proportion of sand. Piero Busso describes the wine as having more depth, structure and enveloping fruit than the younger-vine cuvée, and the winemaking is scaled to match: maceration for up to sixty days under a submerged cap, then 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks and a further 36 months in bottle before release. The result is an old-school Barbaresco, dark and tightly wound on opening, that unwinds towards florals and red fruit with air. The magnum format slows its development further.
Built for the cellar; give it a decade in magnum, or several hours of air if opening now. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, hare ragù or aged Parmigiano.
