Description
Piero Busso Barbaresco Gallina Viti Vecchie Riserva is drawn from a single parcel of vines planted in 1953 in the heart of the Gallina cru.
Gallina is one of Neive's best-known MGAs, made famous by Bruno Giacosa, and Busso bought his 1.3 hectares there in 1999. The vines sit at 240 metres on a low twisting ridge opposite Albesani, facing south-west towards the river in a windy microclimate, on limestone-rich Sant'Agata marl with sandy and calcareous layers. From 2015 Piero began separating the oldest vines for this Riserva; the soil in that part of the vineyard is rich in bluish-grey calcareous clay with some sand. The fruit macerates for up to sixty days under a submerged cap, then the wine spends 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks and a further 36 months in bottle. Busso describes Gallina as the softer, more charming of his Riservas, with sweeter tannins than the Albesani.
Approachable now with a decant, and built to keep for a decade or more. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, agnolotti del plin or a mature Castelmagno.
