Piero Busso Barbaresco Mondino 2019

Piero Busso Barbaresco Mondino comes from the Bricco Mondino section at the top of the Balluri cru, north-east of Albesani.

Piero Busso works from Neive, in the eastern half of Barbaresco, and has built a reputation for site-driven, traditionally made Nebbiolo across a handful of small parcels. Busso farms 1.6 hectares of 40- to 50-year-old vines in the upper part of Balluri, a plot facing south-west near the crown of the slope. The soil is mostly limestone-rich clay with a high proportion of sand, and that sand is the reason this bottling is the most approachable of the estate's Barbarescos: it moderates extraction and gives a wine of medium weight rather than sheer mass. Winemaking follows the house pattern of natural fermentation and ageing in large cask, with the accent on transparency to the site rather than on oak. The result is fine and pretty, with cut and a crunchy, faintly ferrous finish.

The most drinkable of the range on release, with five to ten years ahead of it. Serve at 16-18°C with roast guinea fowl, tajarin with butter and sage, or a young Toma.
