Piero Busso Barbaresco San Stunet 1.5L MAGNUM 2019

Piero Busso Barbaresco San Stunet in magnum comes from a steep, high vineyard in Treiso, the only Busso cru outside Neive.

Piero Busso farms a handful of small parcels around Neive, in the eastern half of Barbaresco, and is known for site-driven Nebbiolo made along traditional lines. San Stunet is his only cru outside Neive, in the village of Treiso, where 1.5 hectares of vines sit at 400 metres on a 16% gradient. The soils are yellow marl with a high proportion of limestone, and the rows lie on the south-east face of the ridge, the aspect that gives the deepest and most articulate Nebbiolo of this site. It ripens late and is usually picked around ten days after the estate's other vineyards, which holds acidity and tannin. Winemaking follows the house pattern used for the Albesani Vigna Borgese: natural fermentation in tank, then 26 months in large cask. The wine carries more flesh and more punch than the Albesani, with firmer tannins and higher acidity. The 1.5-litre format slows the ageing curve, which suits a wine of this structure.

Ideally give it ten to fifteen years; opened young it wants a long decant and a Burgundy glass. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, hare ragù or a mature alpine cheese.
