Description
Piero Busso Barbaresco San Stunet is the only Busso cru outside Neive, from a steep, high site in the village of Treiso.
Piero Busso works from Neive, in the eastern half of Barbaresco, and has built a reputation for site-driven, traditionally made Nebbiolo across a handful of small parcels. San Stunet sits at 400 metres on a 16% gradient, and Busso farms 1.5 hectares there on soils of yellow marl with a high limestone content. His rows lie on the south-east face of the ridge, the aspect that gives the deepest and most articulate Nebbiolo of this cru. The site ripens late and is usually picked around ten days after the estate's other vineyards, which preserves acidity and tannic drive. Winemaking is identical to the Albesani Vigna Borgese: natural fermentation in tank, then 26 months in large cask. The wine carries more flesh than the Albesani and more punch, with both firmer tannins and higher acidity.
Best with ten to fifteen years in bottle, or a long decant and a Burgundy glass if opened young. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, hare ragù or a mature alpine cheese.
