Description
Pierre de Segonzac Cognac XO is a deep, long-aged Grande Champagne cognac from a grower-distiller in the region's premier cru.
By law this category needs at least ten years in cask, though grower houses like this one usually bottle older reserves. The family grow Ugni Blanc in the chalk around the village of Segonzac, ferment it without sulphur into a thin, acidic wine and distil it twice on the lees in Charentais copper pot stills, which adds weight and aroma. Ageing happens in French oak in their own cellars, and it's bottled at 40% alcohol.
Dried fig, orange peel, spice and plenty of rancio. It's a digestif to take slowly, neat at room temperature in a tulip glass, with dark chocolate, nuts or an aged hard cheese.
