Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2019

This magnum holds Pierre Gaillard's Saint-Joseph rouge, drawn from several parcels in the high country of Malleval and Chavanay at the northern end of the appellation.

Saint-Joseph sprawls along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and the sector where these vines sit is closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône. The slopes are steep and cool and the soils carry plenty of granite, which contributes the mineral cut that marks this perfumed and vibrant style of Syrah. Each parcel is vinified separately, ageing is mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels for 18 months, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. The 1.5-litre format matters as well as the wine: the larger volume of liquid relative to the small amount of air in the neck means a magnum matures more slowly and more evenly than a standard bottle, which suits a wine of this kind and makes it a sensible choice for the table or the cellar.

Good on release and will hold longer in this format; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, beef ribs or a mature hard cheese.
