Description
Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge, in a 375ml half bottle, is a granite-grown northern Rhône Syrah from the appellation's far north.
Saint-Joseph runs for some sixty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and the character of the wine depends heavily on where in that stretch the fruit is grown. Gaillard's red comes from several parcels in the high country of Malleval and Chavanay, closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône at the southern end. The steep, cool slopes here carry a good deal of granite, which is what gives this Syrah its mineral cut and its perfume rather than sheer weight. Pierre Gaillard, who also holds vines in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu, vinifies each parcel separately. Ageing is mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels for eighteen months, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. The half bottle is a useful format for a single serving or for an earlier look at the wine.
Drinking well now and over five to eight years, with half bottles maturing a little faster. Good with roast lamb, duck or grilled mushrooms. Serve at 16-18°C.
