Description
Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroie Premier Cru is a white Burgundy from one of the premier cru climats that sit immediately above the village of Chassagne-Montrachet.
Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey works from Chassagne-Montrachet, having trained at his family's domaine in Saint-Aubin before establishing his own label. His whites follow a consistent method: whole-bunch pressing, a slow settling of the juice, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in barrel, minimal bâtonnage and an unusually long élevage, often approaching two years. He favours larger 350-litre barrels over the standard Burgundian pièce to moderate the influence of oak, and seals the bottles with wax rather than foil. La Maltroie lies on brown limestone and marl on the slope behind the village, a premier cru that tends to give Chardonnay of breadth and density rather than delicacy; the long ageing draws that weight into a firm, saline finish.
A broad but tightly wound white Burgundy that repays cellaring; serve at 12 to 13 degrees with lobster, scallops, poultry in cream sauce or a mature hard cheese.
