Description
Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Monthelie rouge Clos des Champs Fulliot is a premier cru red from a walled parcel on the best slope of this small Côte de Beaune village.
Monthelie sits in the fold between Volnay and Auxey-Duresses, its vineyards continuing the Volnay slope westwards before the valley turns away from the Côte. Les Champs Fulliot is the leading premier cru of the commune, on the eastern flank directly adjoining Volnay, on thin clay-limestone soils with a good south-easterly exposure, and the Clos is a walled section within it. Reds here have much of Volnay's red-fruited perfume and fine tannin with a firmer, more rustic edge, and they have long been among the best value premier crus of the Côte de Beaune. Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, based in Chassagne-Montrachet and best known for his whites, applies the same restrained approach to his reds, ageing in barrel with very little new oak.
Perfumed and fine framed, it suits duck, roast pork and mushroom dishes; serve at around 16 degrees.
