Description

Pimpernel Shiraz is a savoury, cool-climate Yarra Valley Shiraz from the Horrigan family's Pimpernel Vineyards near Coldstream.

East of Melbourne, the Yarra is best known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and elegant, spicy Shiraz. Mark Horrigan, a cardiologist, set up the vineyard near Coldstream with his family in the early 2000s, and the wines have a French accent. This one is medium-bodied and savoury, with French oak kept in check so the site's spice and fruit show. A few years in bottle have added secondary complexity.

Dark cherry, pepper and spice on a supple, savoury palate. A short decant helps. Pour at 16–18°C with lamb shoulder, roast duck or a mushroom and lentil pie.
