Place of Changing Winds Annus Horribilis is a one-off Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir made from a frost-ravaged season.

On the night of 1 October, with budburst just under way, the temperature at the Bullengarook vineyard fell below minus three and stayed there six hours. Frost fans ran and fires were lit; almost every bud and shoot was lost anyway, along with three-quarters of the Pinot Noir and the entire Chardonnay crop. Across 28,000 productive vines the survivors yielded an average of 50 grams each, barely a hundred dozen bottles all up. So there is one Pinot Noir from 2020 and no more, and Robert Walters and Rémi gave it a label of its own. The Latin name describes the season; what is in the bottle argues otherwise.

Pretty and perfumed, with a structural spine that belies the tiny crop: red cherry, rose, dried herbs and fine chalky tannin. A style this vineyard may never repeat. Serve at 15 degrees with duck, roast pork or mushrooms on toast.
