Place of Changing Winds Clos de la Connerie 2019

Place of Changing Winds Clos de la Connerie is a single-block Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir.

The Clos is the part of the Bullengarook vineyard first planted in 2012, an unbroken amphitheatre facing north and northeast at 12,500 vines per hectare. It reliably gives a darker, firmer wine than the rest of the site, and one that looks built for the very long haul. Two bottlings of the 2019 were made, identical in blend, so the team could learn how the wine behaves with more time in cask; one barrique was held back four months and sealed with red wax. This is the earlier of the two. Both should live for decades.

Dark-fruited and powerful, with black cherry, iron and a savoury, earthy underlay, the tannins tight and long. Seductive in spite of the structure. Decant it and serve at 15 to 16 degrees, with duck, squab or a beef and mushroom braise.
