Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Marsanne 2021

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Marsanne is a Bendigo white made largely from Marsanne, with Roussanne in support.

The fruit comes from the same Harcourt vineyard that supplies the estate's Syrah, Roussanne included. Picking waited for full ripeness, the pressing was firm, and the juice went directly into 228- and 500-litre barrels to ferment and age, with both primary and malolactic left to begin unaided. Twelve months in cask were followed by ten in tank before bottling at the start of February 2023. Almost nothing about this resembles standard Australian Marsanne practice, from harvest date to vessel to style. Robert Walters and Rémi rate it their best Rhône white to that point, and Harcourt's granitic soils explain much of its lift.

Rich and broad, with white peach, beeswax, dried pear and a granitic mineral thread keeping it lively. It will grow more honeyed with time but drinks well now. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees with roast chicken, pork belly or a smoked fish pie.
