Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah Magnum is a 1.5-litre bottling of the estate's Bendigo Syrah.

Second release from Harcourt, and a large-format one, which will keep it moving slowly for years. The plot sits on the foothills of Mount Alexander in Victoria's Bendigo zone, on pure granite in a mild climate, ground the team consider among the most promising in Australia for Syrah. Half the ferment was whole bunches. Maturation ran close to two years: first in older 600- and 1,500-litre Stockinger casks, then eight months in a 2,000-litre Stockinger, with bottling in late December 2023. Large wood and no new oak leave perfume and structure to come from the site alone.

Lifted and floral, with blue fruit, black pepper and a fine, granite-edged tannin line, deeper than the perfume suggests. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. A magnum feeds a table: lamb shoulder, grilled beef or a vegetable and lentil braise.
