Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah Magnum is a large-format Syrah from the granite soils of Harcourt North.

Third Syrah from this site, and from the granite-rich Lome vineyard the prettiest and most floral yet, barely touching 13 per cent alcohol. A long hang and slow ripening in 2023 let Robert Walters and Rémi pick precisely when they wanted, and the balance of the wine shows it. Sixty per cent whole bunches went in, and maturation ran close to two years in large-format Stockinger of 500, 1,500 and 2,000 litres, with bottling in late February 2025. Magnum will stretch its development out considerably, and the cooler vintage gives it the acid to justify the wait.

Floral and peppery, with red and blue fruit, a granitic mineral thread and fine, quietly firm tannin. Depth without weight. Serve at 16 degrees after a decant. Good across a long lunch, with roast lamb, duck or grilled mushrooms.
