Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah Magnum is a 1.5-litre bottling of the estate's Heathcote Syrah.

The vines are east-facing and past twenty years old, rooted in the red Cambrian soil of the Mount Camel Range in the north of Heathcote, a subregion capable of the district's most refined wines while still growing Syrah of real power, which is why this cuvée gets an extra year in wood. The 2021 spent its first year across Stockinger casks and concrete tank, then moved into a single 2,000-litre Stockinger for the rest, with bottling in the last days of November 2023, 33 months on. New oak amounts to about 10 per cent. In magnum it will take its time.

Dark-fruited and gently spiced, with blackberry, iron and a savoury edge, and at 13 per cent it refreshes where the region is often heavy. Decant and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. A magnum handles a roast: lamb, beef ribs, or a tray of vegetables and grains.
