Place Of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Place of Changing Winds Heathcote Syrah Magnum is a large-format Syrah from old vines on the Mount Camel Range.

Twenty-plus-year-old east-facing vines in the red Cambrian soils of that range supply this wine. The northern end of Heathcote produces the district's most refined reds, though power still comes with the territory, so the cuvée is held an extra year in cask. Its first year passed across an assortment of neutral barrels, after which everything went into a 2,000-litre Stockinger for the remainder, and bottling followed at the end of February 2025, three years of wood behind it. Just over 13 per cent alcohol, refined and savoury, yet deep enough to look almost indestructible. Magnum only slows that further.

Savoury and perfumed, with dark plum, dried herbs, iron filings and a long mineral finish, the tannin fine and persistent. Decant and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Made for a table: slow-roasted lamb, beef cheeks, or mushrooms and polenta.
